Bringing Out the Esmeralda : 
The words "modern navy" likely bring to mind images of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, high-tech destroyers and cruisers, cruise missiles and jet aircraft.  That's all true, as far as it goes...  but there is still something to be said for learning the traditions of the sea, hearing the wind in the rigging and feeling the satisfaction of a properly trimmed sail.  In October of 2007, the Chilean barquentine B.E. Esmeralda visited Pearl Harbor.  "B.E." stands for "Buque Escuela," literally "school ship."  She's a 4-masted tall ship used by the Chilean Navy to train young men how to be sailors.  As she prepared to depart Pearl en route to her next port of call, I had the unique opportunity to ride along on one of the tugboats that assisted her in getting underway.  Ironically, the tugs that helped her out of the harbor were decidedly higher-tech than the Esmeralda herself!

Pride of America : 
Cruise ships need maintenance, too...  In May of 2008, the Norwegian Cruise Line's MS Pride of America steamed her way into Pearl Harbor to use one of the dry docks there, and I managed to catch her on the way in.
