Memorial Day Lantern Floating 2009 : Every Memorial Day, as the sun sets on Honolulu, the waters surrounding Magic Island come alive with the flickering lights of thousands of lanterns. These lights are part of an ancient Asian tradition of releasing lanterns into the sea to commemorate lost loved ones. According to the official web site (http://www.lanternfloatinghawaii.com), "As the lanterns are released onto the ocean they take with them our healing prayers for victims of conflict, famine, disaster and disease as well as our hopes for the happiness of all past and present."

In 2009, I was lucky enough to witness this magical event, and I captured some images I'd like to share. Enjoy!

Bringing Out the Esmeralda :
The words "modern navy" likely bring to mind images of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, high-tech destroyers and cruisers, cruise missiles and jet aircraft. That's all true, as far as it goes... but there is still something to be said for learning the traditions of the sea, hearing the wind in the rigging and feeling the satisfaction of a properly trimmed sail. In October of 2007, the Chilean barquentine B.E. Esmeralda visited Pearl Harbor. "B.E." stands for "Buque Escuela," literally "school ship." She's a 4-masted tall ship used by the Chilean Navy to train young men how to be sailors. As she prepared to depart Pearl en route to her next port of call, I had the unique opportunity to ride along on one of the tugboats that assisted her in getting underway. Ironically, the tugs that helped her out of the harbor were decidedly higher-tech than the Esmeralda herself!
